1932 Ribbed Soaker Pattern.
I had the inspiration for this from a book of patterns from 1932 I was given by dh's aunt. It was published by the Lux soap company.
The pattern in with old style wool that is no longer available and needles in a weird size. So what I did was work with the yarn and needles I usually use and instead of casting on the # of stitches in the pattern, I cast on the # I usually use.
The soaker stretches where it needs to, but stays unstretched in the crotch. The crotch gets more wool so it absorbs better where it needs to. This soaker will fit much longer than others.
I would recomend that you use a yarn that does not stretch very much, I would not recomend that you use a merino. The yarn I like is Peruvian wool from elann.com.
This is my changed pattern for a 15-30lb baby
#5 needles. Worsted wool
Cast on 52 stitches.
Do 8 rows in K2,P2 ribbing.
Do an eyelet row (k2,yo, p2tog) *this row is optional for drawstring
K2,p2 for 16-18 more inches
Do an eyelet row
K,2,p2 for 8 more rows.
Cast off.
Stitch up the sides leaving a hole on each side for baby's legs.
Cuffs: (optional) You can add cuffs if desired by picking up stitches around the legholes. Make sure that the # of stitches is divisible by 4 and do a K2,P2 rib. Make sure you have enough stitches or the cuffs will be too tight. I use size 3 dpn's for the cuffs.
